Pushing the boundaries of what airborne geophysics can do

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

AirGeo’s R&D program is built on a simple principle:

We don’t just ask what a system was designed to do — we ask what it can do. This mindset, famously embodied in the Apollo program, drives our exploration of new ideas in airborne geophysics.

Our research focuses on technically feasible, high‑impact concepts that sit beyond conventional survey thinking:

  • Magnetic‑Anomaly‑Guided Navigation
Using magnetic gradients and anomaly signatures as supplementary navigation cues to enhance situational awareness and enable targeted exploration.

  • Adaptive Surveying
Real‑time anomaly detection that dynamically adjusts flight lines, density, or altitude to focus on areas of interest.

  • Magnetic Map‑Aided Flight
Integrating regional magnetic models and local survey data to refine navigation and improve repeatability.

  • Real‑Time Magnetic Intelligence
Onboard scalar magnetometers providing immediate QC, anomaly detection, and flight‑path optimisation.

  • AI‑Assisted Interpretation at the Edge
Lightweight onboard models that flag structural features or anomaly clusters during flight.

Exploring the edges of possibility

Why we explore these ideas

The future of airborne geophysics will be defined by:

  • smarter workflows

  • adaptive autonomy

  • richer data

  • sovereign engineering

  • and the courage to explore ideas others overlook

A NASA‑inspired engineering philosophy

AirGeo’s R&D approach mirrors the discipline of aerospace engineering:

  • Test, iterate, refine

  • Push the envelope without compromising safety

  • Innovate within constraints

  • Solve real problems with practical engineering

We’re not chasing science fiction — we’re exploring what’s actually possible with modern sensors, UAVs, and intelligent systems.

Having completed hundreds of thousands of line km of UAV survey in some really rugged terrain and climatic conditions, we no longer want to rely on "Hope it Works" as a strategy!

In-field technology smarts and QC capability means we can, each day on site and when we leave site, know what we captured was, what and how we planned it!

Only through the pain of survey mission failure due to equipment inadequacies, can you really grasp and learn from real world problems. This is the single most important factor in what we do - fix and improve every layer of the operations.  It is a truisim you cannot fix what you don't know. And truly Experience matters!
